Are textbook authors going to embrace the ipad?

Major textbook publishers have struck deals with third party iphone/ipod touch developers to adapt their textbooks for the electronic page. This could be the clearest indication yet that the industry is ready to embrace digital devices and that Apple's ipad could be at the forefront of this transformation.  

So far McGraw-Hill, Houghton Mifflin, Pearson and Kaplan have signed deals with ScrollMotion Inc to build new applications for assessment, revision and teaching around their content. 

Rik Kranenburg from McGraw-Hill's higher education unit said: “People have been talking about the impact of technology on education for 25 years. It feels like it is really going to happen in 2010,”

36,000 pupils take new Diplomas

36,000 pupils took up the new Diploma courses in Autumn 2009. This is 4,000 fewer than expected. The Creative and Media diploma was most popular, being taken up by nearly 10,000 students.

Higher Education Budget cuts 2010 /11 announced

The government is to cut university funding in England by a total of £398m for 2010-11 compared with this year, Business Secretary Lord Mandelson said.

In a letter to the Higher Education Funding Council For England (Hefce), he also asks universities to protect quality and access to higher education.

His letter confirms efficiency savings of £180m and £83m - and makes a further £135m budget reduction.
