TALENT is a project that leads and influences change to advance the status of and opportunity for technical skills, roles and careers in UK higher education. It is led by the Midlands Innovation (MI) consortium of eight universities in collaboration with key stakeholder and industry partners.
As part of an upcoming national policy commission, TALENT were seeking to develop a deeper understanding of future technical skills requirements, in line with emerging technology and equipment.
Shift were commissioned to carry out desk research into emerging trends, technology and equipment, as well as the impact these will be likely to have on the technical community in terms of skills needs.
Alongside this, Shift conducted secondary analysis of data generated from an Innovate UK survey, which explored the future skills needs of relevant technical audiences and how each of these scored against measures of opportunity, UK capability and societal impact.
Shift produced a combined report of findings from the desk research and secondary analysis of the Innovate UK survey data. The report discussed a vast array of new and updated skills required from the technical workforce in UK science and research, and highlighted key considerations around investment in infrastructure and challenges associated with new ways of working.
