Open Access Journal Survey

The brief 

Springer Nature commissioned Shift Insight to conduct research to allow them to review their market position, in line with competitors, and to inform their overall strategy. 

The approach

A survey was devised to explore awareness, perceptions and needs in relation to Nature Portfolio open access journals, as well as competitors. The survey was launched via Springer Nature channels, as well as through external sources to be able to draw comparisons with the wider audience who are currently unknown to Springer Nature. The survey tested 72 journals in total and resulted in a final sample of 6,473 respondents. It had global reach, including Springer Nature’s key markets of China, US, Japan, UK and Germany, and covered all science specialisms.

The value

We delivered a full visual report and presentation of findings alongside access to Q Reader to allow Springer Nature to delve deeper into the data. A series of marketing funnels were also created to show conversion rates from awareness to journal submission across core journals. We also made recommendations of key areas for Springer Nature to focus on when looking to boost awareness and submission rates across core journal titles.
