PGT Portfolio Review

The brief

UAL: London College of Fashion (LCF) wanted to develop their postgraduate portfolio to focus on both present and future strengths to ensure their taught postgraduate portfolio would be aligned with the future needs of the fashion industry and students.

The approach

LCF decided that they would like Shift to take a qualitative approach to the research, while carrying out their own quantitative analysis in-house. Our research, which explored current and future industry trends, the ways in which fashion education needs to respond to these trends, and perceived strengths and weaknesses of the current postgraduate portfolio, comprised:

  • Delphi study – 20 interviews with LCF staff and industry partners, and a qualitative survey completed by 52 LCF staff and industry partners.
  • Mobile ethnographic study with 36 prospective students.
  • Interviews with 10 international education agents.
  • Desk research into the approaches taken by other institutions.

The value

Shift produced a comprehensive research report detailing the findings from the study, including the profile of respondents, fashion (and related) industry trends, skills gaps/future job roles, what this means for fashion education, what prospective students are looking for, LCF’s strengths and areas for development and how LCF can move their postgraduate portfolio forward.
