Portfolio Review

The brief

Wrexham Glyndŵr University (WGU) requested a thorough portfolio review of their foundation and undergraduate provision. Shift conducted the desk-based and quantitative analysis. The aim of this was to improve alignment of WGU’s portfolio with developments and trends in the higher education sector. This work had been undertaken alongside a parallel project, focused on primary research into learner preferences.

The approach

  • Stage 1: Internal interviews with subject leaders to ensure that we fully understood the context of courses under review.
  • Stage 2: Data exploration – a review of existing data reports provided by WGU around course performance and demographics, and analysis of HESA data across 6 subjects and 44 courses. Desk research into changes to employment and wider changes and trends in higher education.
  • Stage 3: Competitor workshops – one with each subject team using a collaborative approach via Mural to facilitate identification of key competitors and inspirational institutions and generate discussion of potential areas for investigation.
  • Stage 4: Competitor analysis – a review of up to 6 successful competitors in each broad subject area, e.g. ‘business’. This phase included institutions identified in the previous phases as having similar target students or experiencing significant growth or being highly successful in terms of student satisfaction/student outcomes.

The value

Shift provided a fully visual report and accompanying data pack for reference, plus a presentation for the senior leadership team of the university and subsequent workshops for each subject team – each with its own slide deck to reflect the circumstances of each team.
