Usability research (August 2021)

The brief

  • Sumdog were developing an online maths assessment library that will map to the national curriculum.
  • Shift conducted an initial stage of research to gather information around teachers’ needs and wants from a new assessment bank.
  • The results from this fed into development of product prototypes that required user-testing before a full launch on the Sumdog platform.

The approach

  • 10 usability interviews were conducted via Microsoft Teams in which wireframes were shared with respondents.
  • Respondents were given access to the wireframes and, whilst sharing their screen, were asked to complete a series of tasks using the tool.
  • Interviewers then probed into how user-friendly teachers found the tool, unpicked any areas of difficulty, and assessed how respondents might improve the tool further.

The value

  • Interviews were scheduled over a purposefully wide window, allowing for Shift and Sumdog to met regularly throughout the fieldwork to discuss reactions to the prototype. This allowed Sumdog to regularly adapt the platform and to test multiple iterations of the tool.
  • A full report with recommendation for further development was provided.
